The production of double haploid lines takes two generations. In the first year, haploid seed is induced on donor populations and selected for haploids. In the second year, haploid seed is germinated, treated for chromosome doubling and transferred to the field. Individual plants with restored fertility are then self-pollinated to produce the DH0 generation seed.
The main steps in DH technology are
(1) Induction
(2) Selection
(3) Doubling and DH production
